Naomi’s Story

Turning pain into purpose.

“I made a promise to myself that I would find a way so that no girl would ever have to feel that kind of shame or go through what I went through. But even in hardship, I chose hope.”

— Naomi Mukangamo

"I was born in Congo and later lived as a refugee in Uganda, where life was never easy. I still remember the days when accessing even the most basic needs — like sanitary pads, soap, or a toothbrush — felt impossible. Hygiene was something people around me cared about but couldn’t afford, simply because we didn’t have the means.

One day, when I was a young girl, I remember feeling ashamed and broken because I didn’t have a pad. All I wanted was to feel clean and confident like the other girls. That painful moment changed my life forever. I made a promise to myself that I would find a way so that no girl would ever have to feel that kind of shame or go through what I went through.

That promise became my purpose, and it inspired me to create She Deserves More, a project dedicated to supporting refugee and immigrant girls by giving them dignity kits, education, and love.

Being a refugee is not a choice. It’s a circumstance of life, something that happens outside of the control we think we have. But even in hardship, I was able to decide something: I chose hope.

Our mission goes beyond giving. It’s also about education, empowerment, and prevention. Through She Deserves More, we not only donate these essentials. We also teach girls how to protect themselves, be independent, and believe in their worth. We want to stop early pregnancy and guide these girls toward a brighter future, while reminding them every single day that they deserve more.

Doing this work is my way of giving back turning my pain into purpose and my struggles into strength for others.”

Restore dignity, locally and sustainably.

She Deserves More was created to immediately begin restoring dignity to those living in the refugee camps of Uganda who were going through menstruation. But then, we wanted to do something bigger while we were at it.
